Aircon: A Must-Have in a Japanese Apartment

Ron Schröter • Jul 07, 2023

Summer is in full swing. The beach, BBQs, hanging out at the pool... Whatever you're doing I hope you're able to find time to relax and have a little fun.

We all know summer in Central Japan comes with a lot of hot days and nights. Nagoya especially can be very hot and humid. Do you know what can help make your life more comfortable?
An aircon!
(Air Conditioner or Heat Pump as they are known in North America).

An apartment's aircon situation is something to check and think about when looking at apartments. You would think that all apartments would come with at least one aircon that is working when you move in. However, this is not always the case. In fact, if you're renting from a private owner, rarely will apartments come with an aircon unit. And if they do, they are sometimes a bit old and the property owner will not want to take responsibility for repairs.

This actually happened to me at my last place. I moved in and there were no working aircons in the apartment. I thought I might be okay without one since the previous renter went 3 years without. I was wrong. I paid to have a refurbished aircon installed and the old one removed. The aircon, installation and removal of the old one, cost me about ¥60,000. A brand new aircon can probably run about ¥100,000 installed. If you are in need of an aircon please contact me and I'd be happy to put you in touch with some local companies that can assist.

I recently showed an apartment in Tsurumai that actually came with two newer and working aircons. In my experience this is a rare situation.

UR Apartments will usually come with one unit. I live in a UR Apartment and brought the one I had bought earlier to my new apartment. So now I have two units and can stay quite comfortable during the summer and winter.

I have only seen a central air system installed in a property here in Japan a handful of times. In Japan each room you want temperature controlled will need its own unit. These aircons provide cold and hot air for all seasons. Window units are available and are not too difficult to install yourself, but only provide cold air for the summer.

So remember, it's important to know if the apartment you are looking at has an aircon unit installed already or not. And if it doesn't, you'll need to add that to your budget for moving in.
